Strong second half effort for eight domestic win for LevskiJanuary 11, 2014
After a strong second half Levski beat Rilski Sportist for the second time during this season and practically throw opponents out of the first four for the final standings of the second phase in the championship in the NBL. This was the first game for boys Titi Papazov for the new calendar 2014 year, and they like the women′s team started with a important victory. The final score of the match was 80-72 points, it was the eighth win for Levski since the beginning of the championship. Until the end of the second part in the league there is 5 games for Levski and three of them are at home while two are away - versus Lukoil and Yambol. Only successes in all meetings will ensure that Levski will finish at second place in the standings before the Cup of Bulgaria, which is at the end of February. However next week they have a serious test in Sofia against Cherno More Port Varna, direct derby for the second position at the current standing. Rilski Sportist has 6 wins and as many losses after this match, which gives them very slim chance to get into the best four before the Cup of Bulgaria.
Levski started better and got the early lead in the game. The hosts responded and cut the lead to just six points at the end of first quarter - 23-17. Rilski Sportist play better in the second quarter and not only tied but turn into own lead at the break with eight points difference - 36-44.
This was the only moment of weakness in the team of coach Titi Papazov, after the break he got everything into the right place and Levski got better and better with every minute on the clock. Thanks to its defense in the middle of the third quarter they were up 50-46. At the end of the third quarter Levski again had advantage 59-57.
Levski scored the first nine points in the fourth quarter, while Rilski sportist couldn't manage to score in the first 4 minutes of that part. The difference became double digits and in the remaining six minutes Levski managed to keep their advance of 10+ points. The hosts cut it to 8 but that was the final result of the game - 80-72 in favor of Levski.
Americans Lionel Chalmers and Jumaine Jones both finished with 17 points while JJ also added 13 rebounds for his consecutive double-double. Nikolay Varbanov scored 15 points and Djordje Micic added 13. Very well from the bench played the young talent of Levski Alex Simeonov who finished with 6 points.
For Rilski Sportist Calhoun scored 15 points , 14 points respectively .
Wednesday Levski mwill face Sigal Prishtina in match of the Balkan League and on Saturday will get Cherno More at home for possible revenge for their loss in Varna earlier in the season. Both matches are in "Universiada" Hall in Sofia tipping at 18.00 o'clock local time.
